Collecting, Drying, & Storing Herbs

Seeds
- Tie paper or cheesecloth around seed pods to catch seeds, or cut while the pods are still green & place them upside down in a paper bag (no more than 8 pods together). Be sure to label the bags
- Gather pods & string them on a cheesecloth net
- No matter what, keep them in a well ventilated place

Roots
- Best when the whole plant is uprooted in late autumn
- Wash & break into pieces
- Dry on flat screens; spread the roots out & turn them once or twice a week
- Grind up once dry

Bark
- Gather during late autumn or early spring
- Tear off in vertical strips
- Hang it on a clothesline to dry (or a line indoors)
- Grind up once dry

Flowers
- Gather early in the morning, before the sun gets hot
- Half-open blooms are more likely to stay whole
- Can be dried on screens; or hang from ceiling in a "hammock" of cheesecloth; or bury them in white sand in a flower pot, then place it in the sun for one week

Herbs
- Cut the stalk halfway from the top of the plant
- Clean the cuttings thoroughly
- Can be dried in the oven
- Place in a paper bag & hang dry them or place them in the refrigerator for about 30 days.

**With anything, always keep in a cool, dry place**
